Today was an insightful day as we visited the Organic Research Field of Dr. Sumati Narayan, a pioneer in organic farming and Professor-cum-Chief Scientist, Ex-Head, Division of Vegetable Science, SKUAST-Kashmir. Dr. Narayan’s work has been instrumental in advancing organic farming in Kashmir, showcasing innovations that bring sustainable, eco-friendly agricultural practices to life. Her dedication has led to the development of essential technologies that support organic farming specific to Kashmir’s unique ecosystem.
🌱 Breakthroughs in Organic Farming 🌱
Dr. Narayan’s contributions to organic agriculture have set new standards in sustainable farming for the region. Some of her key initiatives include:
Organic Vegetable Block: This block was established as a model for farmers, allowing them to observe and understand organic vegetable production techniques firsthand.
Low-Cost Vermicomposting: Dr. Narayan initiated Kashmir’s first low-cost, portable vermicomposting program, a resourceful solution to recycle organic waste and enrich soil health affordably.
NADEP Composting Program: She introduced the NADEP composting method, a low-cost technique that efficiently converts agricultural waste into nutrient-rich compost, enhancing soil fertility sustainably.
Dal Weed Composting: Utilizing the unique Dal lake weed as a composting material, Dr. Narayan developed a program to repurpose this natural resource, creating a nutrient-dense compost that supports crop growth while managing the lake’s weed issue.
Innovative Pest Management for Whitefly: Recognizing the threat of whitefly in protected vegetables, she developed groundbreaking strategies to manage this pest—an issue of global concern in organic vegetable farming.
Vermiwash Production: Dr. Narayan also pioneered Vermiwash technology in Kashmir, producing a liquid fertilizer rich in nutrients and enzymes that promote plant growth and improve resistance against diseases.
🌍 A Model for Sustainable Agriculture
These organic innovations have profound implications for Kashmir’s agricultural community, offering eco-friendly alternatives to conventional farming. Through her initiatives, Dr. Narayan has created a practical, sustainable framework that not only boosts crop productivity but also conserves resources and promotes biodiversity. Her pioneering work aligns with the goals of the Directorate of Agriculture, Kashmir, and is a testament to the support of the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India in promoting sustainable agricultural practices in Kashmir.
Celebrating Innovation in Organic Farming 🌿
Dr. Sumati Narayan’s contributions have set a new direction for agriculture in Kashmir. Her commitment to innovation and sustainable farming practices reflects a larger vision for eco-conscious agriculture that can serve as a model for farmers across India and beyond. This visit has been a reminder of the endless possibilities that emerge when research, technology, and nature come together in harmony.
